I am contacting you in support of HB 557 relating to the growth or cultivation of industrial hemp for certain research purposes.
The United States is the largest consumer of industrial hemp in the world with over $621 million imported in 2014. These numbers exclude retail sales from Costco, Whole Foods, Sams, etc. which makes hemp over a billion dollar industry in the United States.
Industrial hemp is grown in 31 countries including, China, Russia, and Canada and currently there are 21 states with Industrial Hemp laws for cultivation in place in the US. Hemp is the cannabis plant with 0.3% or less of THC and has none of the psychoactive effects associated with marihuana.
Industrial hemp can be used to produce over 25,000 different products, and if Texas does not adopt HB 557 Texas farmers will be three growing seasons behind 23 other states that will be establishing best farming practices, seed varieties, and overall market share of the food, fiber, oil, and building products that can be derived from the crop.
I ask you to support our Texas farmers, business, and consumers by bringing this issues to a vote on the House floor as soon as possible.
